Olympic Qualifying Tournament closes with a victory for Canada

(Sportcom) – Despite Saturday’s huge disappointment when a ticket to the Rio Games escaped the Canadian senior women, the team managed a final win on Monday, on the last day of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Gouda. Facing the French, the representatives of Canada prevailed 11-6 and left the Netherlands in seventh position in the international tournament.
The Canadians led the game from the very beginning, forging ahead 3-1 in the first quarter and 5-2 at the end of the first half. Canada stayed unfazed in the second half of the match; widening the gap to 9-5 in the third quarter and finally sealing the outcome of the match at 11-6.
On Saturday, the Canadians had suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 defeat against Italy in the quarterfinals. A place in the semis would have allowed them to qualify for the Olympics. On their subsequent classification match on Sunday, they lost 12-10 to the Greeks.

"It is very difficult to play games like yesterday’s and today’s after such a massive disappointment. The girls can hold their heads up high for their overall performance, "said head coach of the national team David Paradelo, visibly proud of his protegees. "We stood together until the end and we literally believed in our chances until the last second."
"Now is the time to refocus our priorities and use this experience to build a successful program," said the Montrealer.
It will now be up to the men's national team to earn a spot for the upcoming Olympics. To compete in Rio, the Canadians will need to get in the top four of the qualifying tournament to be held from April 3 to 10 in Trieste, Italy.
