Belgrade 2017 – Day 6: Canada will play for the 9-12 bracket after losing to the United States

(Belgrade, Serbia, August 10) – Canada knew they would face a tough opponent entering Thursday’s round of sixteen against the United States. The Americans had a strong showing and looked determined to secure a spot in the quarterfinal. In the end, the United States topped Canada 14-4 in the rematch of the 2016 Junior Pan Americans Championships Gold Medal game in Edmonton.

The United States took the lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on early opportunities. Aleksa Gardijan scored on the Canadian power play to put his team on the board before the end of the quarter. USA opened the second quarter with a goal on the extra-man, just to see Alexis Reiher answered with one for his team. The United States extended their lead to 7-2 before the end of the first half.

The United States did not slow down in the second half, adding three consecutive goals to accentuate their lead. A couple of unlucky posts prevented the Canadian team from coming back in the third quarter. Mark Spooner and Jérémie Côté both found the back of the net in the fourth quarter. However, the Americans kept the pace high until the end of the game, adding four goals to earn a 14-4 victory.

“We played with intensity, but it was a really tough game. We will bounce back tomorrow against China” said Benjamin Lemay-Lavoie of the 20U Men’s National Team.

Canada will play for 9th-12th place at the 2017 FINA Junior Men’s World Championships, starting tomorrow (August 11) against China at 1:20 pm local/ 10:20 am ET.
