Taipei 2017: Canada to play for 9th place after loss against Great Britain

The Canadian Men will have to play for the 9 th to 16 th bracket after losing 7-6 to Great Britain at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei. In a very close matchup, the British squad capitalized on their opportunities throughout the game, netting the game winner in the final quarter.

Canada’s Sean Spooner opened up the score with a goal from centre at 5:34 in the first quarter. Nikita Prokhin and Devon Thumwood tallied on Canadian power plays to put the score at 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Canada managed to keep their one goal lead in the second quarter as Reuel D’Souza took advantage of the extra man (4-3).

Great Britain outscored Canada 3-2 in the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the final quarter. Great Britain seized the opportunity in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on the extra-man advantage to close out the victory.

Devon Thumwood and Sean Spooner found the back of the net twice in this game. D’Souza and Prokhin completed the score for Canada in the 7-6 loss.

Canada will now play for the 9 th to 16 th place bracket starting with South Africa August 25 at 9:00 am local time/ 9:00 pm ET (August 24).
