Taipei 2017: Canada falls to USA in FISU Games quarterfinals

Canada had the big task of facing a strong U.S. team in the FISU Games quarterfinals. In a hard-fought battle, the Americans took full advantage of their opportunities to record a 13-7 win and move on to the semi-finals. Canada will now have to play for the 5th to 8th place bracket at the 2017 Summer Universiade.

The United States had a strong first quarter capitalizing on two extra-man opportunities to take a 4-1 lead. Canada’s Axelle Crevier netted one on the Canadian power play to put the score at 2-7 at halftime.

Canada’s came out stronger in the third quarter, Elyse Lemay-Lavoie scoring twice to complete the hat trick. Kindred Paul netted one from centre to come within five heading into the fourth quarter (5-10).

Emma Wright found the back of the net twice in the final quarter, but the Americans added three goals of their own to confirm a 13-7 win over the red and white. In the end, the U.S. team took advantage of their chances while the Canadian squ ad was a bit unlucky in front of the net.

“We started the game following the game plan. However, a couple of unnecessary mistakes cut our legs early in the game.” commented Canada’s Head Coach, David Paradelo. “We had to play catchup water polo and this is very difficult to do against a well-organized team like USA. Unfortunately, we gave them some easy goals while we were working hard to create opportunities.”

“We fought hard in our game. We were able to come out strong in the beginning but in the end the US broke through our defence. They played a good game and unfortunately we weren't able to keep up.” said Emma Wright. “Despite this, we are still looking forward. There are two more games for us to play in this tournament for us to improve and build as a team.”

Canada will now face Italy who lost its matchup to Japan (17-15) earlier today. The game will take place August 28 at 3:00 pm local time/ 3:00 am ET.
