Taipei 2017: Canada to play for 5th place after win over Italy

The Canadian women had a strong showing against Italy after their loss to the U.S. in the quarterfinals. Once again, the depth and creativity of the Canadian offence made the difference in the 16-13 victory. Canada will now face Australia in the 5 th place match Tuesday.

Canada took a 3-0 early lead in the first quarter, Italy answered back with two goals. Emma Wright would add two more goals to complete the hat trick (5-4) in the first. Italy found the equalizer on the power play at 6:02 of the second quarter. The Canadian women dominated the second half of the quarter scoring 4 unanswered goals to take a 10-6 lead at halftime.

The teams exchanged three goals in the third quarter, Kyra Christmas found the back of the net from long-distance. Elyse Lemay-Lavoie scored her fourth and fifth of the game to give her team a 13-8 lead. Italy would tally one to put the score at 9-13 heading into the final quarter.

Hayley McKelvey netted one from outside to give Canada a 15-10 lead and Christmas completed her hat-trick to put her team in front 16-10. Italy scored three goals in the last two minutes, but the Canadian lead was too big to overcome.

Shae Fournier scored twice and Gurpreeet Sohi added a single in the Canadian victory.

“We started the game off strong, and kept our tempo up on offence, we were able to capitalize on many of our opportunities which made it hard for Italy to come back in the game.” stated Kyra Christmas. “We are looking to clean up our defence in the last game and continue what we were doing on offence.”

“The offensive creativity shown by the team was fantastic. We have a few wrinkles to smooth out on the defensive side.” said assistant coach Cora Campbell. “Tomorrow we look forward to playing the Aussies who won this tournament two years ago.”

Canada will take on Australia for 5th place this Tuesday August 29 at 4:30 pm local / 4:30 am ET.
