Volos 2017: Canada falls to Italy in hard-fought battle

(Volos, Greece - September 4 2017) - The Canadian women were neck and neck with the Italians for most of the game. However, Italy took advantage of their opportunities in the fourth quarter to record an 8-5 win.

Italy opened the score early in the first quarter, Canada’s Axelle Crevier answered right away with a goal of her own. The Italians added two goals to take a 3-1 lead. Maria Mimides netted one for the red and white just to see Joelle Nacouzi tie the score at 3-3 moments later. Italy managed to regain the lead before the end of the quarter (4-3).

Brianna Utas found the equalizer for Canada halfway through the second quarter. The Italian squad recaptured the lead early in the third and would add one more goal to take a 2-goal advantage. Utas tallied her second of the game to put Canada within one (5-6) heading into the fourth quarter.

The Italians found the back of the net twice in the last quarter taking a confortable lead with only one minute to go. Canada tried to come back, but with so little time left Italy closed out the 8-5 victory. Despite the defeat, the Canadian defense contained the Italians and limited them to only a few opportunities throughout the game.

“The team worked until the end. We played well defensively allowing us to stay in the game. We still need to work on our offense, especially the power play. Despite the loss, I believe the team is much more prepared and confident for the upcoming games” said Axelle Crevier.

The Canadian women will face Serbia tomorrow, September 5 at 10:20 am local time / 3:20 am ET. Live stream is available via https://telesport.gr (Live 1).
