Canada moves on to semi-final after win against New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand, April 6, 2018 – The Canadian women won their matchup against New Zealand 2 to earn a spot in the semi-final at the 2018 FINA Inter-Continental Cup. In a match where the Canadians were rarely challenged, they were able to perform well offensively to record an 18-4 win against a young New Zealand team.

Canada had a clear objective in mind heading into the opening quarter, settle the attack and take an early lead. Five different players scored for Canada in the first quarter, Brianna Utas netted her first goal with the Senior National team and gave Canada a 5-0 lead.

The Canadian women scored four more goals before the Kiwis answered back with one of their own to put the score at 9 -1 just before halftime. Floranne Carroll scored her two first goals at the Senior level in the game, her second coming half way through the third quarter. The New Zealand team took advantage of a double exclusion scoring their third goal of the match. Krystina Alogbo answered back to give her team an 11-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Canada kept its rhythm in the final quarter, adding four goals to put the mark at 18-4. Monika Eggens tallied her fifth of the night in the last minutes of the game, and she’s now leading the tournament with 20 goals in four games. Kelly McKee also completed her hat trick in the fourth quarter. Alogbo, Carroll, and Tielmann had doubles in the 18-4 win. Utas, Fournier, Caron and Bekhazi completed the scoresheet with a goal apiece for Canada.

“The game went well today, we met our objectives, and the players respected the plan. We made a few mistakes on the finish, but overall I’m satisfied with the team’s performance. Tomorrow, we play the United States in the semi-final. It will be a good game; I want the team to continue their tournament’s progression. We will need to be consistent and follow the game plan as we did in previous matches.” said David Paradelo, Head Coach of the Women’s National Team.
