Canada confirms second place in Group B with win over Japan

Kunshan, China, May 30, 2018 – Canada confirmed its second place in Group B after defeating Japan 13-4 in the last game of the preliminary round at the FINA World League Super Final in Kunshan, China. The Canadians came out strong in the first half, and they were able to control the game offensively. After taking a 9-1 lead at halftime, Canada managed the second half well to record a 13-4 win.

Monika Eggens opened the scoring for Canada, beating the goalkeeper with a lob shot. Krystina Alogbo doubled the score for the red and white (2-0). The Canadian defense limited the Japanese’s chances, and Canada showed a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Eggens picked up where she left off, scoring her fourth goal of the game. A converted penalty by Shae Fournier and a double by Elyse Lemay-Lavoie gave Canada a 9-1 lead at the end of the first half.

Japan had their best moments at the beginning of the third quarter, Kotori Suzuki scored on a penalty, and Yumi Arima found the back of the net from outside to bring the score to 9-3. Canada’s answer came from Axelle Crevier who completed a great play by Joelle Bekhazi. Kindred Paul converted a penalty shot to help Canada regain an eight-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter. Joelle Bekhazi and Hayley McKelvey each tallied one in the final quarter to help Canada record a 13-4 win.

With this victory, the Canadian women finish second in Group B and will face China (3rd Group A) in the crossover tomorrow, May 31 at 7:30 pm local time/ 7:30 am EDT. All the games are live streamed on FINA TV.
