Canada falls to Spain in Day 1 action at the FINA World Men’s Youth Championships

(Szombathely, Hungary – August 11, 2018) – The Canadian 18U men’s team fell to Spain 19-2 in their first group game at the 2018 FINA World Men’s Youth Water Polo Championships in Szombathely, Hungary. The Canadian men faced a significant challenge heading into this matchup as the Spaniards are one the favourites to win the tournament.

The Canadians had difficulty passing Spain’s defence for most of the game mostly relying on outside shots. In the first quarter, the Canadian men were able to limit the chances for the Spaniards allowing only three goals. Spain extended its lead in the second quarter to put the score at 8-1 at half-time.

The Spaniards came out strong in the third quarter adding seven goals to take a 15-1 lead heading into the final quarter. Canada was able to slow down the pace a little bit in the fourth quarter restricting the opportunities for the opposing team. Nicholas Serediuc scored his second goal of the game with a bit more than five minutes on the clock. Both sides exchanged chances in the last minutes of the game, but Spain was too far ahead to hope for a comeback. The Spaniards recorded a 19-2 win.

The Canadian men will be back in action on Monday, August 13 as they will face Saudi Arabia at 12:10 pm (local) / 6:10 am EDT. For the complete schedule, please visit the event website.

Both teams had to adjust quickly in this game since the 2018 FINA Youth World Championships is one of the test events for the new water polo rules proposed at the FINA World Water Polo Conference held in Budapest in April 2018. The FINA World Women’s Youth Championships and the FINA World Cup Events will also serve as test events for these new rules. To learn more about these proposed rules, click HERE .
