Canada loses to Serbia on the fourth day of competition at the FINA Youth World Championships

(Szombathely, Hungary - August 14, 2018) – The Canadian 18U Men’s National Team lost 21-4 to Serbia in its third match at the 2018 FINA Youth World Championships in Szombathely, Hungary. Canada faced another significant challenge in this tournament since Serbia had defeated Spain by one goal earlier this week.

The Serbian team came out strong in the first quarter taking a 7-2 lead. Canada’s Bor Tanasijevic scored twice to put his team on the board. The Canadians stepped up their defensive game in the second quarter limiting Serbia to only two goals in the period (9-2).

Canada maintained the pressure in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but the Serbians capitalized on their extra-man opportunities to increase their lead to 14-2 heading into the final quarter. The Canadian team found the back of the net again in the fourth quarter. Sandro Miletic tallied one from outside on the power play, and Diego Gonzalez converted a penalty shot with 1:13 to go in the game. At the other side of the pool, Serbia added seven goals to record a 21-4 victory.

The last round-robin game promises to be interesting for the Canadians as they will face the Colombians for third place in Group D. This game is scheduled for August 15, 2018, at 4:50 pm (local)/ 10:50 EDT. Canada won the previous matchup between the two teams, capturing the bronze medal at the 2017 Youth Pan American Championships following a 13-12 win over Colombia.
