Canada to play for 13th place after loss against Colombia.

(Szombathely, Hungary, August 15, 2018) – The Canadian Men will have to play for the 13th to 20th bracket after losing 11-6 to Colombia in their last group game at the 2018 FINA Youth World Championship in Hungary. In a very close match, the Colombian team outscored Canada 5-2 in the fourth quarter to record the win and confirm its third place in Group D.

Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of the game as the Canadian men were looking to find their rhythm in the first quarter. Canada’s Minos Kotzambasis made vital saves to keep the score at 0-0 early on. Colombia finally opened the scoring on a penalty shot with 2:55 to go in the first period. Garrett Davis answered back with a powerful shot from the right side to even the score for Canada. The Colombians capitalized on their extra-man advantage to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Colombians picked up where they left off in the second quarter, extending their lead to 3-1. Callin Chimilar then tallied one to keep his team within one goal. Once again, Colombia would be able to find the back of the net on the power play to regain a two-goal lead (2-4). Canada’s answer came from Sandro Miletic with only 23 seconds left in the first half.

Canada came out strong in the third quarter, looking to create something on offense. Diego Gonzalez converted a penalty shot early in the quarter to tie the game (4-4). Two quick goals by Colombia in the last minute of the quarter put the Canadians in a difficult position heading into the final quarter.

Canada was up for the challenge again when Nicholas Serediuc found the back of the net with 7:33 on the clock, but four unanswered goals by Colombia made it difficult for a possible comeback. Chimilar scored his second goal of the game in the last minute of the fourth quarter but it was too late for the red and white, and Colombia confirmed the 11-6 victory.

The Canadian men’s national team finishes fourth in Group D and will face South Africa (5A) tomorrow at 12:30 pm (local) / 6:30 am ET. Live stream is available on FINA TV .
