Canada edges Serbia 10-8 to claim the third spot in Group A

(Belgrade, Serbia, August 29, 2018) – The Canadian women picked up their first win at the FINA Youth World Championship in Belgrade, Serbia. In a crucial matchup against Serbia, the Canadians scored two late goals in the fourth quarter to earn a 10-8 win and claim the third spot in Group A.

Jaiden Miller opened the scoring for Canada in the first quarter. Serbia answered back right away with a goal to tie the game at 1-1. Blaire McDowell found the back of the net with a beautiful long-range skip shot just seconds later to give Canada a 2-1 lead. Both teams exchanged opportunities throughout the quarter. Alison Cameron doubled the Canadian lead on the power play with a little over a minute to go in the first quarter. The Serbians would cut the lead in half with a counter-attack goal before the end of the period (3-2).

Serbia had a strong start in the second quarter, Nadia Novakovic tied the game at 3-3 in the first minute of the period. Miller tallied one from outside less than a minute later to help the Canadians regain the lead 4-3. Once again, the Serbian squad was able to even the score before the end of the half (4-4).

The Canucks dominated the third quarter extending their lead to 8-4. Apryl Gonzalez score first on the Canadian power play to see Ava Morrant net one on the counter-attack. McDowell and Cameron each scored their second goal of the game to put Canada in front 8-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Canadians were looking to secure their win in the fourth quarter. They were able to limit Serbia’s opportunities for the first three minutes of the quarter, but four goals in three minutes by the Serbians would bring back the teams at 8-8. The Canadian squad stayed calm, and Gonzalez netted her second of the game on the next possession to regain the lead. A great defensive play would give back the ball to the Canadians with 0:51 on the clock. After passing the ball in an attempt to run down the clock, Floranne Carroll surprised the goalkeeper with a long distance shot. A turnover by Serbia in the last seconds of the match would help Canada confirm the 10-8 victory.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game. To play against Serbia in front of their fans, it’s always a challenge. We had to play our game and block ourselves from the outside noise. We struggled with this in the final quarter, but in the end, we were able to take over and record the win. Tomorrow is going to be a difficult match no matter the opponent. We will need to be ready to fight for our spot in the top 8.” commented Canada’s Apryl Gonzalez, who scored the game-winner and named MVP of the match.

With this win, Canada finishes third in Group A and will face Australia (Second place of Group B) tomorrow at 18:00 local time / 12:00 ET. Live stream is available on FINA TV .
