Montreal to host the 2020 Water Polo Canada National Finals

(Ottawa, ON - May 14, 2019) - Water Polo Canada is pleased to announce that the city of Montreal has been selected to host three of Water Polo Canada’s (WPC) most prestigious National Championship League (NCL) events for the 2020 season. Montreal will welcome the Senior National Championships, the 19 and under Eastern Conference Championships and 16 and under & 19 and under National Finals to its city in the spring of 2020.

The National Championships League features Canada's top water polo athletes competing across four categories (Senior, 19 and under, 16 and under, and 14 and under) for the right to become Canadian National Champions. The NCL season is seven months long and features more than 100 teams playing in over 900 games across the country. The three championship events Montreal will host in 2020 represent the culmination of the 2020 NCL season and will directly determine the Senior, 19 and under, and 16 and under National Champions.

The city of Montreal has a rich history in water polo. The city was the site of some of the first organized water polo in North America, and the Goulden Cup, the Canadian Senior Men’s National Championship trophy, was first awarded to a club from Montreal in 1907. Montreal’s success on the national level has continued into present day with local clubs winning 11 National titles since the creation of the NCL in 2014-2015; the most of any city in Canada. Montreal has also hosted numerous national and international competitions and represents a premier destination for the sport of water polo, on both the domestic and international stage.

"We're delighted to be holding once again Water Polo National Championship League events in 2020. With international-calibre aquatic facilities and a festive ambiance, Montréal is the perfect place to hold these competitions," said Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal. "These events are a great opportunity to benefit the region economically and socially while boosting its sport capabilities and also reflects Montréal sports events strategy," he added.

“The National Championship League is well established within the Canadian sports landscape, and these three competitions represent the ultimate goal for the participating teams. In collaboration with our local partners, we look forward to welcoming athletes and coaches from across Canada to Montreal. These high-caliber tournaments will undoubtedly offer a lot of action to the local fans!" said Martin Goulet, Executive Director of Water Polo Canada.
