Canadian water polo team ready to compete at the 2019 Summer Universiade

(Naples, Italy – June 30, 2019) –  On July 2nd, the Canadian women’s water polo team will kick off its tournament at the 30th Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy. Ten teams will compete in the event this year, Canada who placed in the top 5 at the three last editions, will look to once again finish among the top water polo nations.

The Women’s competition includes two groups, meaning that each team will play four round-robin games followed by a playoff stage. The Canadian women’s team will compete in Pool A alongside Hungary, Japan, Czech Republic, and France. In Pool A, Canada will face two experienced nations, Hungary and Japan, who finished second and third, respectively, in Taipei (2017). The 2017 defending champions, USA, will be competing in Pool B.

Many of the athletes that will represent Canada gained valuable international experience playing on different Youth and Junior National Teams in past years. Seven of the Team Canada players were part of the Canadian women’s squad that won a gold medal at the 2018 Junior Pan American Championships last July.

The Canadian Women will start their tournament by facing Japan on Tuesday, July 2 at 15:30 local time/ 9:30 ET. See below the complete schedule. Daily updates will be available on U Sports Team Canada website .
