Funchal 2019: Canada to play for 9th-12th place after 18-6 loss to Italy

(Funchal, Madeira – September 12, 2019) – The Canadian women's team will now play for the 9-12 standings after losing 18-6 to Italy at the 2019 Junior World Championships in Funchal.

Despite a close first quarter between the two teams, the Italian women took advantage of their chances in the second and third quarter to show a 16-6 lead. The Canadians limited the opponent to two goals in the fourth quarter, but they had difficulty creating opportunities on offence and Italy recorded an 18-6 win to advance to the quarter-finals.

Floranne Carroll led the way for the Canadians with her second hat-trick of the tournament. Daphné Guèvremont, Paige Donald and Verica Bakoc also scored for Canada.

"Our game against Italy didn't end in the result we wanted. We went in strong, but at the end of the second period and the beginning of the 3rd, we began to get frustrated, and I believe this impacted our style of play and game intensity. In our game against Brazil, we need to be prepared to go in ready to play our best game, because both teams are aiming for the win. It's not going to be an easy game. I believe that we can produce the result we want if we all work together and play as a team," said Paige Donald after the game.

The Canadian women’s team will play Brazil tomorrow at 11:40 am local time / 6:40 am ET. Live stream is available on FINA TV (subscription required).
