The Water Polo Canada Senior National Championships return to Markham in 2019

Water Polo Canada (WPC) is pleased to announce that the City of Markham will host two National Championship Events in 2019 at the Markham Pan Am Centre. In collaboration with the City of Markham, the Ontario Water Polo Association, and the Mavericks Water Polo Club, WPC is excited to bring the Senior National Championships and the 14U Eastern National Finals to Markham.

The Senior National Championships and the 14U Eastern National Finals are two of the premier events in Canadian Water Polo. Both events are the pinnacle of their respective water polo age groups, with the teams earning their way to the Finals after months of competition; for a chance at being crowned National Champions.

The City of Markham has been a hub for water polo in Canada since hosting the water polo competition at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. The Markham Pan Am Centre has held domestic and international WPC events every year since 2014. On the domestic level, Markham has served as a dedicated partner for WPC’s National Championship League (NCL), the highest water polo league in Canada. Since the NCL’s founding in 2014, Markham has hosted eight NCL competitions, including the 2017 19 and under Eastern Conference Championships and the 2017 Senior National Championships.

“We are very excited to host the Senior Finals in Markham once again, as well as bring the 14U Championships to the city. The city of Markham, the Pan Am Centre, and the Mavericks Water Polo Club have been great partners for Canadian water polo, and Water Polo Canada is looking forward to growing these partnerships. With the best players in the country traveling to Markham to compete in these prestigious events, this promises to be an exciting pair of weekends for the fans.” mentions WPC Executive Director, Martin Goulet.

The 2019 Senior National Championships will determine the National Champions of men’s and women’s water polo in Canada. The Goulden Cup, awarded to the men’s champions, is one of the oldest continuously awarded trophies in Canada, dating back to 1907. The top eight men’s and women’s team in the country will qualify for the event, based on their performance during the Major League Water Polo (MLWP) season. The MLWP season runs from November to March, with teams split into Eastern (Ontario + Quebec) and Western (Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) Conferences. MLWP is open to athletes 16 years of age and older and features the best water polo players in Canada, including members of both the women’s and men’s national teams. The top teams from each conference qualify for the finals, where three elimination rounds over three days will determine the National Champions.

Markham is a global sports destination,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti, “the Markham Pan Am Centre is a state-of-the-art facility and the ideal venue to watch Canada’s best compete. The Water Polo Canada Senior National Championships will create a strong sense of community, inspire young athletes to pursue excellence in sport and celebrate our Canadian identity."

The 14U Eastern National Finals are a newer event within Canada. The 14U Eastern Finals bring together the best 14 and under boys and girls teams from Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes to crown a champion of Eastern Canada. Teams qualify from their respective provincial leagues, with a total of eight girls’ and eight boys’ berths available at the Finals. The Finals consist of a round robin, followed by a playoff round to determine the champions. Along with determining an Eastern National Champion, the 14U Finals also represent a chance to celebrate youth water polo in Canada, and to introduce athletes to other water polo players from across the country.

The 2019 Eastern National Events are scheduled as followed:
