Lima 2019: Canadian women dominate Cuba and earn their first victory

(Lima, Peru – August 4, 2019) – The Canadian women's team had an impressive start at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games dominating Cuba 20-5 in their first match of pool play. The Canadian women pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Cubans 7-0 to take a 15-2 lead with one quarter to go. Canada continued to push in the fourth quarter and confirmed the 20-5 win.

Canada's defense was solid throughout the match, limiting Cuba to a few opportunities. Goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault led the way for the Canadians saving two penalties against Cuba. The depth of the Canadian squad was shown at the other end of the pool, with eight different players scoring in the match. Axelle Crevier and Shae Fournier tallied four goals each while Krystina Alogbo, Monika Eggens, and Joelle Bekhazi netted doubles in the game.

Emma Wright took advantage of the Canadian power play and completed her hat-trick early in the third quarter. Alberta natives, Kindred Paul and Kelly McKee, completed the scoresheet for Canada with one goal each.

"We were a bit shaky at the beginning, and we made a couple of mistakes in the opening minutes. However, we were prepared for this match, and we quickly readjusted. We were able to play our game for the rest of the way. Tomorrow, we are facing Peru, which is a team we don't see that often. It's hard to say what to expect. As a team, we are looking to forward to playing Peru in front of the local fans." indicated Head Coach David Paradelo after the match.

The Canadian women (1-0) will be back in action on Monday morning when they will take on Peru at 9:30 am local time (10:30 am ET).
