Lima 2019: Canada runs away from Mexico, finishes undefeated in pool play

(Lima, Peru – August 6, 2019) – The Canadian women’s team had another strong showing to earn a third win at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. A 27-6 win over Mexico secured the top spot in Group B for the Canadians, and they will now face Venezuela in the quarterfinals.

After a close first quarter between the two nations, the Canadian women were able to adapt to Mexico’s style of play in the second quarter and showed an 11-4 lead at halftime. Canada continued to put pressure in the second half outscoring Mexico 16-2 to record the 27-6 win.


This game was another demonstration of this squad’s depth with six different players scoring a hat-trick. Emma Wright and Shae Fournier netted four goals each while Kindred Paul had one for the Canadians.


After the match, Hayley McKelvey talked about the importance of this competition for the Women’s National Team: “We are building on what we have been working on all year. We are happy with our performance in pool play, and we are ready for the next phase. Our ultimate goal at this tournament is qualifying for the Olympics, and we are determined to reach our objective.”
