(Lima, Peru – August 9, 2010) – It was an exciting day at the pool for our Canadian teams; the Canadian women’s team punched their ticket for Tokyo 2020 after defeating Brazil 19-5 win in the semi-final. In another hard-fought battle, the Canadian men edged Brazil 8-7 in the semi-final to advance to the Gold Medal Game, and they will play for the Olympic berth tomorrow.

With the United States already qualified, the Canadian women had to make it to the gold medal to confirm their qualification for Tokyo. The Canadian women came into the match with a lot of confidence, taking control early on. Doubles from Monika Eggens and Shae Fournier put Canada in front 4-1 after the first quarter. The Brazilians answered back with three goals in the second quarter, but Canada continued to push on offence to show a 9-4 lead at halftime. Power play efficiency was the key for the Canadians in the second half, converting six of their seven opportunities to record the 19-5 win.

“The team went out and played according to our game plan. Brazil scored first, but the girls came back on the next attack and scored right away. The athletes have been playing well all week and showed a lot of resilience in the tournament. I’m proud of how we did this week, we played one game at the time, knowing our chance to qualify would come in the semi-final. The girls executed everything according to the plan, and we were able to reach our objective and earn our qualification which is exciting. Tomorrow, we play for the gold medal against the USA, and it will certainly be a tough match. The United States have been very successful in the last few years. It will be important that we follow to our game plan and avoid giving them the edge with counter-attacks and power plays.” indicated Women’s National Team Head Coach, David Paradelo.

The Women’s gold medal match between Canada and the United States will take place tomorrow, August 10 at 12:30 pm Local time / 1:30 pm Eastern time. No live streaming available. Live results and play by play are available at .
