Funchal 2019: Canada falls to China in Day 1 action at the FINA Junior World Championships

(Funchal, Madeira – September 9, 2019) – The Canadian women's team fell 9-12 to China on the first day of the 2019 FINA Women's Junior World Championships.

After a close first quarter, the Chinese took advantage of their extra-man opportunities and jumped to a 2-6 lead at the end of the second period. The Canadian squad stepped up their game in the second half. Verica Bakoc, Brianna Utas and Paige Donald each tallied one to bring the score to 5-8 at the end of the third quarter.

Two quick goals early in the fourth quarter gave China a five-goal advantage, but Valeria Rojas and Daphné Guèvremont answered back for Canada. The Canadians added two more goals, but China held on to confirm the 9-12 win.

"The coaches gave us all the tools we needed to be ready in preparation for this game. We knew that their center was their biggest asset and that they would use her as much as possible, but we had difficulty staying out of the box. In attack, many of our shots were not even on target, which hurt us a lot. However, we created several great opportunities on our drives, and we just need to improve on our execution. Against Greece, it will be another tough match in the center, but this is our chance to implement what we have learned from our game against China." said Daphné Guèvremont, Captain of the Canadian team.

The Canadian women's team will face Greece tomorrow at 16:00 local time / 11:00 ET. Live stream is available on FINA TV (subscription required)
