Funchal 2019: Canada loses to Greece at the 2019 Junior World Championships

(Funchal, Madeira – September 10, 2019) – The Canadian Women’s Team is still looking for its first win at the 2019 FINA Junior World Championships in Funchal, after a 16-9 loss to Greece earlier today.

The Greeks had a strong first half, outscoring the Canadians 11-3. Floranne Carroll and Paige Donald each tallied one in the first quarter while Verica Bakoc was the only scorer for Canada in the second quarter.

Like in their previous game against China, the Canadians had a strong second-half showing. Ava Morrant put one past the goalkeeper early in the third quarter, but the Greeks answered back with a power-play goal moments later. Daphné Guèvremont netted one on the next Canadian possession to put the score at 12-5. However, Greece added three more goals to show a 15-5 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Canada came out firing in the fourth quarter. Apryl Gonzalez scored her first of the tournament on the Canadian power play while Bakoc netted two more goals to complete her hat-trick. Blaire McDowell found the back of the net with a beautiful lob with less than a minute to play, but it was too late for the Canadians, and Greece earned the 16-9 victory.

“We knew going into the game that Greece was going to be a strong opponent, and we would need to play our best water polo. Unfortunately, we started slower than we had planned, and after that, it was a game of catch up. We had good moments in the game, but it was not enough to beat them. We have another crucial game tomorrow against New Zealand, and therefore we plan to reset our minds and focus on that game. New Zealand will be a strong opponent as well, and we need to start the game off strong with high intensity and stay in control of the match. They are in the same position as we are so it is going to be battle tomorrow.” commented Verica Bakoc of the Junior Women’s Team

Canada will play New Zealand for the third place of Group D, tomorrow at 10:20 am local / 5:20 am ET. Live stream is available on FINA TV (subscription required).
