Funchal 2019: Canada edges Brazil to move on to 9th-place match

(Funchal, Madeira – September 13, 2019) – The Canadian junior women’s team edged Brazil 7-9 to move on to the 9th place match at the 2019 FINA Junior Women’s World Championships in Funchal, Madeira. In a back and forth affair, the Canadians outscored their opponents 4-2 in the fourth quarter to record the win.

Verica Bakoc and Daphné Guèvremont helped Canada jump to a 0-2 lead early in the first quarter. Alice Ana Amaral scored her first of the game at 0:42 to bring Brazil within one (1-2). Brianna Utas netted one from the perimeter early in the second quarter to help Canada regain a two-goal lead. Brazil answered back on the power play just to see Guèvremont tally her second of the day to keep the two-goal advantage. The Brazilians capitalized on their next extra-man opportunity to stay close in the score at halftime (3-4).

The Brazilian squad found the equalizer early in the second half, but Canada’s Adrien Van Dyke answered back on the next possession to put Canada back in command at 4-5. Brazil’s offence leveled the score 5-5 with a quick power-play goal at 5:55 of the third quarter. The Brazilians took the lead twice in the fourth quarter, but each time Canada came back to put the mark at 7-7 with 3:39 to go. Bakoc netted her second of the match on the Canadian power play while Floranne Carroll beat the keeper with a powerful shot to give Canada the final lead and get the 7-9 win.

“During today’s game, we were able to play with a lot more focus and discipline and were also able to maintain that throughout most of the game. We will definitely need that discipline and focus in our next game against Australia. They are a challenging team with a lot of experience,” mentioned Adrien Van Dyke of the Women’s National Team.

The Canadian Women will battle for 9th place at these 2019 FINA Junior World Championship as they face Australia on Saturday, 11:20 am local time / 6:20 am ET. Live stream is available on FINA TV (subscription required).
