Montreal to host the 2019 Women’s Water Polo Canada Cup

(Montreal, QC – November 1, 2019) – Water Polo Canada (WPC) is pleased to announce that the 2019 Canada Cup will be held from December 10-14, 2019, at the Parc Olympique in Montreal, QC. The sixth edition of the Canada Cup will welcome the United States (2012 & 2016 Olympic Champions), the Netherlands (2008 Olympic Champions), Russia, and China to Montreal for a five-day tournament.

The 2019 Canada Cup is a fantastic opportunity for Canadian fans to see the Women’s National Team in action on home soil. The five nations will play in a regular round-robin tournament with the Canada Cup being awarded to the team with the best record.

“We are delighted with the thought of holding the Canada Cup in Montreal in December. This international competition represents a tremendous opportunity to see our Canadian Women’s Team in action before Tokyo 2020,” indicated Water Polo Canada Executive Director Martin Goulet. “Sports fans from all across the country will have a chance to discover or rediscover water polo when they come and watch the best teams in the world perform.”

The Canada Cup tournament will mark the beginning of a crucial season for the Canadian Women’s Team as they prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. After almost 16 years since their last participation, the Canadian women are determined to make an impact in 2020.

"The Canada Cup will be the first competition of this caliber presented in Canada for a long time. It is crucial to welcome and compete against these four world-class teams in our preparation for the Olympic Games. We intend to implement what we've been working on over the last couple of months, to determine where we are in our progression, "explained David Paradelo, Head coach of the Women's National Team. "Being at home, playing in the pool where we train every day and in front of our fans, it will be very special for the team. The pressure to compete at home for the Canada Cup and the Holiday Cup tournament the following week will be great opportunities to simulate the Olympic tournament. We hope to learn from our opponents, but also from ourselves, to move forward and achieve our goals.”
