Canada falls to the United States at the Holiday Cup

(December 20, 2019) – The second matchup in two weeks between the North American rivals didn’t go as planned for the Canadian women’s team; Team USA capitalized on its opportunities early in the game, building up to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and an 11-1 lead at halftime. The Canadians came out with more intensity in the second half, but, in the end, the goal-difference was just too big to overcome, and the US recorded a 17-6 win.

The American squad took advantage of Canada’s exclusions in the first quarter, scoring twice on the power play and converting two penalties early on. Joelle Bekhazi put Canada on the board at 2:14 of the first quarter. The United States gained control in second quarter and scored nine unanswered goals before Bekhazi stopped the sequence, netting her second and third of the night on the Canadian power play.

Both teams traded goals in the fourth quarter; the United States added two goals early in the period. Krystina Alogbo netted the fourth Canadian goal just to see Gurpreet Sohi find the back of the net moments later. Emma Wright completed the score for the Canadians in the final minutes of the game, but the Americans confirmed their 17-6 victory.

The Canadian women’s team will face Russia in the last match of the round-robin, tonight (December 20) at 17:30 ET. The top four teams will play in the finals on Saturday. Live stream is available at
