MLWP – January 24-26 Recap

The Eastern MLWP season is now fully underway, with all teams having participated at the Claude Robillard Sport Complex January 24-26. With only two months before Senior Nationals, there is little room for error as the top six men’s teams and top five women’s teams qualify for National Finals.

On the Women’s side, defending National Champion Mavericks have not lost a step as they sit on top of the standings at 5-0. The Wright sisters have been a dynamic duo as Emma leads the team in goals with 15 while Claire has done well in net, making over 50 saves and sitting in the top five in save percentage and goals-against average. While most of the games Mavericks were in relative control, they did have a tough battle against Dollard on their last game. The first time they played Dollard, they won easily 14-7. This time was completely different. Dollard would not go away as they constantly through shots at Claire Wright, who needed to make 15 saves in the game. Entering the third with only one goal lead, the Mavericks were able to hold on through tight defence as they did not allow a goal in the fourth and win the game 8-7. Emma Wright led the way offensively as she scored four goals in the game. Even with the loss, Dollard showed that they could match Mavericks defensively as they too did not allow a goal in the fourth. Beneath the Mavericks in the standings are a lot of teams close together. The Toronto Golden Jets (3-2) have shown that they can also compete closely with Mavericks as they lost a close 5-4 game the week previous. CAMO sits tied in wins with Toronto with Dollard just a game back. There is still much to be decided in the Senior Women’s age category.

On the Men’s side, there is not one team that pulled away yet as multiple teams are vying for the top spot. The two teams that won the weekend were St-Lambert-Laval and Ottawa United Titans 1 as they both went 3-0. Since St-Lambert played a few games before the weekend, they now sit on top of the standings at 5-1. St-Lambert-Laval were in control throughout all of their games as they scored an impressive 44 goals in just two games. The Ottawa United Titans 1, on the other hand, had some tight games. In the game against CAMO, they came into the fourth two goals down. Zoltan Csepregi had a major impact in the Titans coming back to win as he was involved in the last three goals. On the first goal, he assisted on Ogi Gutovic’s tally. On the second goal, he scored, and on the last goal, he drew a penalty foul which was then converted by Jonathan Ruse with 13 seconds left to win the game. These close games reflect the table as well as there is not much space at the top. Below St-Lambert-Laval is defending National Champion Dollard Islanders at 5-2. After that, there is the Toronto Golden Jets and CAMO at four wins and then Ottawa United Titans at 3-0. It is looking like the final standings won't be close to being decided until much later in the season.
