FINA postpones Men’s Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament due to COVID-19 outbreak

(Ottawa, ON – March 12, 2020) – Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the FINA task force has decided to postpone the 2020 Men’s Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament that was scheduled to start March 22, 2020, in Rotterdam, NED. The competition is delayed to May 31 – June 7, 2020, in Rotterdam.

The Canadian Men’s Water Polo Team has been training in Zeist in preparation for the Olympic Qualification tournament. The athletes and staff will be repatriated to Canada as soon as possible, and Water Polo Canada will continue to follow the recommendations of the Government of Canada.

“The team’s medical staff has been following the COVID-19 situation worldwide and specifically Europe. We understand FINA’s decision to postpone the tournament, and we must first ensure the safety of our athletes and staff. In the coming weeks, we will continue to follow the advice of our medical staff to have the most optimal preparation for the Qualification Tournament and to take the necessary safety precautions.” said Justin Oliveira, Water Polo Canada’s High Performance Director.
