Water Polo Canada Announces Coaching Staff for 2024 Junior Team Programs

Tuesday, January 9, 2024

Ottawa, January 12, 2024 - Water Polo Canada announced today the coaching staff for the upcoming season of its Men’s and Women’s Junior National Water Polo Teams, including for the 2024 Pan American 19U Water Polo Championships.

Women’s Junior National Team
On the women’s side, Marina Radu has been named Head Coach. A former long-time National Team member who won silver medals at World Championships and at two Pan American Games, she was the Assistant Coach of Water Polo Canada’s National Team for the 2023 World Aquatics Women’s U20 Championships. She is currently the Head Coach of the Edmonton Tsunami club.

She will be assisted by Sam Donoghue, who is part of the coaching staff of the Pacific Storm club.

“Marina is bringing a blend of extensive international playing experience and coaching prowess”, said Water Polo Canada’s Senior Manager of Leagues and Pathways, Andrew Muir. “Her leadership style emphasizes teamwork, skill development, and a positive team culture. With a keen eye for talent, she is eager to guide our young women towards achieving personal and team success in the water.”

“Sam will complement Marina's coaching approach well, focusing on individualized player development. His coaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where athletes can thrive. His dedication to nurturing each player's unique strengths aligns perfectly with our commitment to holistic growth.”

Men’s Junior National Team
On the men’s side, the current Water Polo Men’s Senior National Team Head Coach Patrick Oaten will take the lead of the men’s Junior Team this year. He will be assisted by National Team member and part-time Positional Skills Coach Nicolas Constantin-Bicari.

“Pat brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role of Head Coach for our Junior Men's Team”, said Water Polo Canada’s High Performance Director, Olivier Pineau. “With a distinguished coaching career and a passion for player development, he is dedicated to cultivating a winning mentality and helping our young men reach their full potential in the sport. His strategic approach and commitment to excellence will inspire our athletes to aim high and achieve their goals.”

“Nicolas brings a fresh perspective and energy to the team. His outstanding background as an elite player and his rare technical expertise make him an invaluable asset in honing the skills and teamwork of our young athletes. His dedication to the sport and commitment to the players' growth align seamlessly with our vision for success.”

“With this coaching team in place, our Junior Teams are poised for an exciting and successful season”, said Andrew Muir. “The passion, experience, and commitment our coaches bring to their roles will undoubtedly inspire our young athletes to reach new heights in their water polo journeys. With a focus on fostering talent, building strong team dynamics, and achieving success in and out of the pool, our coaching team is well-equipped to guide our young athletes to new heights. We look forward to witnessing the growth, achievements, and camaraderie unfolding under their guidance.”

Date and location for the 2024 Pan American 19U Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Championships have not been yet announced.
