The NCL offers three categories of play: Senior, 18U, and 16U.

In addition, the Club Cup, which is awarded to the club(s) who have won the most championship events across all National Championships League age groups (16U, 18U and Senior) events in a particular season, was awarded to the Calgary Renegades and Calgary Torpedoes clubs.

Clubs receive six points for a gold medal at a National Event (16U Eastern/Western Championships, Senior National Championships and 18U National Championships), four points for a silver and two points for a bronze. They also receive three points for a gold medal at a Conference Championship Event, two points for silver and one point for bronze.
